POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to a librarian, the library information technician (0.8 FTE) is primarily responsible for the maintenance of the College library website, creating the electronic versions of the monthly newsletter, Cites & Bytes, providing first contact for IT support, and providing administrative support for patron outreach activities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- make changes and updates to the library section of the College website as required
- create electronic versions of library newsletter Cites & Bytes
- create accurate links which allow patrons direct access to online resources, through the proxy, in support of library promotional materials and outreach
- maintain the MLS Trans database, including data integrity and liaising with IT staff when updates are required
- investigate and triage reports of IT glitches; peruse descriptions of upcoming technical changes to anticipate potential impacts if possible
- identify appropriate recipients and send outreach or promotional materials such as the welcome emails to new College registrants and committee/board members
- manage guest and other special accounts for logging in to the website
- collect, process, and analyze statistics on library resource and service usage
- manage in-person visits from College registrants with library services, including responding to queries about library services
- provide backup for other library technician tasks such as:
- receive and triage email messages from the public email account
- fill article and book requests, including interlibrary loan processing
- other duties as assigned, such as manage mail drop off and couriers
DECISION-MAKING
In consultation with the librarians, decisions will be made in accordance with established policies and procedures.
ACCOUNTABILITY
The library information technician must have strong initiative and self-motivation, be able to work independently and be accountable for their own work. Teamwork within library services is essential, as well as collaboration with various departments within the College.
CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR/JUDGMENT
A failure to send the correct requested library materials or sending them to the incorrect person could have a significant impact on College registrants or library staff.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Required skills and qualifications include:
- diploma from a post-secondary library technician program, typically of two years duration
- three to five years’ experience working in a library with similar duties, or the equivalent in work experience
- competency in using web-based content management system, database, and integrated library software
- familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
- high attention to detail
- tolerance for ambiguity, particularly regarding IT troubleshooting
- team player with strong written and verbal communication skills
- diplomacy and dedication to customer service
- enthusiasm for electronics and technology
- quick learner and adaptability to change
