Human Resources Business Partner

Position summary

Reporting to the director, human resources (HR), the human resources business partner (HRBP) is responsible for a broad range of HR services in designated business units. In conjunction with the director, HR the HRBP serves as a consultant and trusted advisor to managers on HR-related issues, and as an employee champion and change agent. The role assesses and anticipates HR-related needs. Communicating needs proactively with the rest of the HR department and business unit management, the HRBP seeks to develop, implement and champion people solutions that support the College’s strategic plan and an engaged “employer of choice” culture. 

Duties and responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • build relationships with employees and leaders in assigned units ensuring a thorough understanding of business objectives and opportunities
  • communicate and educate employees and management on significant, relevant changes in HR policies and processes, and applicable legislation
  • collaborate with hiring managers in understanding their staffing needs and lead the recruitment process
  • conduct and continually review the onboarding program to ensure it is effective
  • work with business units to identify training needs and coordinate and/or facilitate appropriate training initiatives
  • participate in College committees and working groups as assigned
  • assist departments/programs with annual business plans
  • support and/or lead human resources projects as assigned
  • coach employees and managers regarding employee relations, career development, and performance management
  • work closely with management and employees to improve work relationships, build morale, and increase productivity and retention
  • maintain in-depth knowledge of legal requirements related to day-to-day management of employees, reducing legal risks and ensuring regulatory compliance
  • perform other HR-related duties as assigned

Skills and qualifications

Required skills and qualifications include:

  • bachelor’s degree in human resources management or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • five or more years of relevant human resources experience
  • certified professional human resources (CPHR) designation preferred
  • ability to build strong relationships, including interfacing and communicating effectively at all levels across the organization
  • must be tactful, diplomatic and possess the ability to communicate with individuals at all levels of an organization
  • broad-based generalist with strong business acumen
  • sound judgement with the highest level of tact and discretion
  • must be detailed oriented, proactive, energetic, results driven, and have strong project management skills
  • must be comfortable with online recruitment tools and as well as Microsoft Office applications
  • strong interpersonal and organizational skills
